Mayor's Welcome
Hello and welcome to Garstang from the Mayor and Councillors of Garstang Town
Council.
It is a great honour to be representing Garstang as Mayor for 2023 to 2024. As
Mayor, I will do everything I can to help and support the Town to thrive. Garstang has
a lot to offer as a destination whether it be for shopping, leisure or business. We are
on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and
within 30 minutes drive of the Lake District National Park.
We have a wide selection of independent retail offerings and our hospitality offerings
are well renowned for their quality and versatility. The Greater Garstang Partnership
Board which was established during the pandemic is looking at how we can help
the short term recovery within Garstang and the surrounding district. Whilst we are
not at liberty to reveal details yet we have some exciting prospects for this year. Our
retail, hospitality and business communities are continuing to recover from the
effects of the pandemic and I thank the recent Mayors who guided the Council
through those times. My aim is to do everything possible to help that progress, but
also to return to a stable plan so our residents know what the Town Council has set
out to do
I am very proud of what we achieve for Garstang as a Town Council but appreciate
there is always room for improvement and there is more work to be done. Many of
our Town Councillors are also involved with a variety of volunteer groups that
together help to make the Town the attraction that it is. Kepple Lane Park Trust,
Millennium Green Trust, Garstang Children’s Festival, Garstang in Bloom, Garstang
Flood Group, Town Trust, Garstang Christmas Lights, Garstang Scarecrow Festival,
Garstang & District Heritage Society, Garstang Sports and Social Club, Our
Councillors work hard for the benefit of the town and the service they provide and
time they devote as a Town or Parish Councillor is completely voluntary.
The Town Council has a good relationship with Wyre Borough through the efforts of
our Ward Councillors and the staff at Wyre I would hope to continue to cement this
relationship at both Town Council and Partnership Board level.
In the forthcoming mayoral year I want to concentrate on what I have described as
‘One Garstang’ where we service all of the community by using all our volunteer
resources and by communicating with all of our residents.
I would like to introduce a ‘Talking Cafe’ where anyone can come and have a cuppa
and talk, loneliness and isolation are a hidden menace in our society.
In my year as Mayor, I have chosen to support the following local good causes
through charity fundraising
The Scout and Guide Headquarters, this building sees over 300 young people
through it’s doors each week and is a fantastic youth resource
Cancer Help [ Garstang] a great Charity offering a superb counselling service
Defying Dementia Research at Lancaster University a local charity working on this
most devastating disease
I hope you will support me in raising funds for these groups.
Please rest assured that the Town Council staff and Councillors are working for you
to support you. If you have any issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact
me, the Clerk or another member of the Council. You are also very welcome to
attend our Council meetings which are held on the 3rd Monday in the month, 7.30pm
in the Library.
Best Wishes to you all.
